| Disability Income: |
| Disability income insurance helps replace a working person's income when he/she experiences a reduction or loss of income due to a covered sickness or injury.
Because Social Security and Workers' Compensation provide benefits only under specified circumstances, many people need additional protection in the form of individually owned disability policies. Many employers offer disability insurance to their employees, but if employer-sponsored disability benefits are not available or are not adequate, a personal policy may be necessary or desirable.
There are three classifications of individually owned disability policies: individual, mortgage, and business. |
 |
-
The individual disability policy provides a benefit to replace lost income up to the policy limits when the insured is unable to work due to a covered sickness or injury.
-
Mortgage disability provides a benefit to pay insured loan payments according to policy provisions when the borrower experiences a loss of income due to a covered sickness or injury.
-
Business overhead
expense policies are designed to
cover insured overhead expenses such as rent,
employees' salaries and utilities within the
terms and limits of the policy when the business
owner or business partner is unable to work
due to a covered sickness or injury.
|
|
Advantages
of owning an individual disability income insurance policy
are that eligibility for benefits is not contingent upon
receipt of benefits under Social Security, and payments
are not subject to certain restrictions that exist for
Social Security eligibility. For example, Social Security
requires a five month waiting period during which no
benefits are payable, and no Social Security benefits
are paid when it is clear that disability will last less
than 12 months. Finally, the definition of "disability" under
Social Security suggests the possibility that some disabilities
may not be covered because disability is defined as the
inability to engage in any occupation.
